Domestic ownership of government bonds in the United States is higher than in other EU countries

Domestic ownership of government #bonds in the United States is higher than in other EU countries.

Local investors in Greece are not very keen to hold local government bonds. Greece’s government debt crisis is likely to be the main contributing factor to the low domestic ownership of local government bonds. The country’s debt crisis eroded confidence in the government’s ability to fully repay its bonds in the future, making them less attractive to domestic investors.

In the meantime, the US Treasury market is the largest and most liquid government bond market. This attracts a large number of investors, including individual, and institutional investors, who view it as a safe-haven asset. Also, the US has higher financial literacy and a strong culture of investing, with many tax incentives to invest locally.
